2021 Annual Appeal
The end of each year offers an opportunity to look back on the year in order to evaluate our growth as a vital provider of cultural and artistic offerings that positively impact our community.
The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF) has been an important asset to the Watkinsville/Athens area for more than 26 years and is acknowledged as a major force in the art and social fabric of northeast Georgia, reflecting both historic and emerging environments. Further, OCAF’s buildings and function are a rare unification of history and the arts.
Twenty-six years after opening our doors, we are still working towards restoring our historic buildings. At this time, our focus is on Rocket Hall, a local landmark, and we need your help. The historic 1933 building owned by the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation was built by volunteers using donations – evidence of the generous nature of our community even during the toughest of times. Many know the building as the Watkinsville School Gym and recall its affiliation with Oconee County schools. The original bleachers, floor, and scoreboard are still intact today. But time has taken its toll on Rocket Hall as it does all things and this important landmark is in need of major restoration to secure its foundation and its structure. In an effort to restore this historical community treasure, we are asking for your help in raising the funds to meet our goal of $500,000 to be able to complete the restoration and return Rocket Hall to its former grandeur.
OCAF depends on this space to host its annual fundraising and cultural events, including the Holiday Market, renowned pottery exhibition and sale Perspectives, and live events, such as our 2020 Golden Gatsby Gala. We also use the space for musical and theatrical performances and hope to expand those endeavors going forward. OCAF has given so much to our community by providing a valuable cultural community space. We are once again asking our community for help in restoring this important landmark to retain its historical integrity as an example of historic vernacular craftsman design. Rocket Hall, named for the Rockets who used to play in the field across the street, is an Oconee County historical treasure built for athletic gatherings and dances and continues to carry on this legacy of being a vital community gathering space.
Your gift, no matter how small or large, can help us reach our goal. Your donation is tax-deductible and will secure your place in OCAF’s history! Naming opportunities are also available for higher levels of giving. The names of those who donate $25,000 or more will have their names displayed on a donor plaque in the foyer of Rocket Hall. We are at your disposal to discuss gift and naming options.
We are also collecting memorabilia, including photographs, uniforms, yearbooks, etc. from Rocket Hall during the time it was used as basketball gym and place for school dances of Oconee County School. If you have an item you would like to donate for the display, please contact either of us or any of our Board members with whom you feel comfortable speaking.
