2022 Annual Appeal

The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (OCAF) has been an important asset to the Watkinsville/Athens area for more than 28 years and is acknowledged as a major force in the art and social fabric of northeast Georgia, reflecting both historic and emerging environments. OCAF hosts approximately 12 exhibitions, 44 courses and workshops, and several educational events throughout the year. OCAF is the go-to when it comes to visual and cultural arts in the community, and we partner with many other organizations to create a true community-based organization.

OCAF’s buildings, grounds, and function are a rare unification of history and the arts. Over the past year, with tremendous support from our donors, we have added the Yukiko Marable Memorial Garden to our grounds and have continued updates to the OCAF Memorial Garden and the Norville Family Garden. We have also begun restoration projects on the three historic buildings that OCAF owns. These buildings have special significance to the community. Rocket Hall, which is almost complete except for the restoration of the front entry hall, is a WPA building that was the old Watkinsville high-school gym. Many members of the community have fond memories playing and attending games in that gym. The old scoreboard and the signatures of the students on the wall are being preserved. This preservation work is due to the generosity of OCAF’s supporters.

We are completing the galley kitchen in School Street Studios. OCAF’s classes and workshops are held in the School Street Studios building, so our long term goal is to upgrade our studio classrooms as we host over 225 students per year! Finally, we will begin work on the 1902 building – OCAF’s main gallery space – next year to address safety and structural stability of that community treasure.

In an effort to complete the restoration of these landmark buildings, expand and care for our gardens and grounds, and continue to bring high-quality exhibitions and programs, we are asking for your help.

With your generosity, we will be able to continue our historic preservation efforts, complete the Yukiko Marable Memorial Garden, and continue supporting local artists, while offering high-quality courses and cultural and visual arts programs.

Your gift, no matter how small or large, can help us reach our goals. Donations are tax-deductible and will secure your place in OCAF’s history! Naming opportunities are also available for higher levels of giving. We are at your disposal to discuss gift and naming options. If you are interested in supporting a specific building project or educational program, please let us know. We have a thriving pottery studio and painting studios, and we would like to have a more permanent metalsmithing studio due to the high demand.

We are also collecting memorabilia, including photographs, uniforms, yearbooks, etc. from Rocket Hall during the time it was used as basketball gym and place for school dances of Oconee County School. If you have an item you would like to donate for the display, please contact either of us or any of our Board members with whom you feel comfortable speaking.
