Project Description

Painting Portraits in Oil with Abner Cope

This is a four-weeks-class designed to help artists enhance their skills in painting portraits. All skill levels, from beginning to advanced are welcome. Instructions will be based on discussions, demonstrations, and individual critiques. While painting from the live model, artists will utilize various techniques for developing accurate proportions, as well as for properly placing the drawing of the model on the canvas. We paint the skin tones of the model utilizing a limited palette of pre-mixed colors. Participants will receive demonstrations, instructions on how to start the portrait with a solid structural drawing done in monochromatic lines. and tones (created with a mixture of ivory black, and raw sienna), on stained canvas. Color, and how to observe color on the model, will be emphasized. The process includes painting the portrait from the darks, to the middle tones, to the lights. We will observe the skin tones of the model on the basis of warm colors, cool colors, and ochre colors.
