Did you know honeybees are not native to the United States? They were imported from Europe by the early settlers to this country. Since their arrival in the early 1600s honeybees have become an integral part of our ecology and our economy. Today honeybees (and all our other native bees and butterflies) are being stressed by new chemical and biological challenges. Pesticides and herbicides are killing some bees and weakening others. New mite and beetle pests are adding to the pressure on their colonies. The bees need our help!
This workshop will help you learn about honeybees and our native bees. We will give you a quick overview of how honeybees live and work in their amazing colonies. We will talk about why bees swarm and then we will each build a honeybee swarm trap to take home.
A swarm trap is an enticing place for a swarm of bees on the move to adopt as their new home. We will build the trap and learn how to add attractive honeycomb and queen-like essential oil smells. If there is a swarm in the area where you put your swarm trap they should scout out your new hive box and, with luck, choose to move in.
We will also complete a couple more smaller projects like a painted stone honeybee paper weight and a feeding/watering station to attract bees and butterflies to your garden.
All supplies and tools needed for these project will be supplied and included in the registration.
